Media makes curry of India, China, Arunachal & Dalai Lama

There is a cold war currently underway between both India and China. I am afraid both the countries are treading the wrong route to end up antagonizing each other. When both these countries use their rhetorics in the media, guess who gets affected? It would be the poor blogs/websites of genuine people like me who has nothing to with the entire murky issue that gets hacked with umpteen threats containing parochial messages.
This entire month Indian media, let it be newspapers or ezines, have been flooded with articles spreading hostility against China in the wake of fresh threats from the comrades arguing the travel of Dalai Lama and the Arunachal Pradesh border issue. Before I pen my views, I want to express my pain witnessing how both the media in China and India has failed to bridge between the nations and has instead escalated a trivial issue. All they need is 1) thrive on sensationalism 2) rouse patriotism among people.
People in India are threatened with a 1962 war repeat. This has apparently created more hate within the Indian community which is now bashing the Chinese non-stop. One of the chief concerns of China was the visit of its favourite rival – the Dalai Lama. It does not want the Nobel laureate to visit or make any speeches to the Tibetans in the disputed border. But, the Indian government, including the US has felt there is nothing wrong in the Buddhist leader addressing his followers. Chinese say the Dalai Lama is involved in mudslinging and mostly making political speeches instead of spiritual. Well, if you have keenly read or followed Dalai Lama’s history, you will see the man always promoted ethics and interfaith harmony. He has promoted DEMOCRACY and has always taught his Tibetan followers never to hate but to surmount it with Love. Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since he fled Chinese-controlled Tibet in 1959, insists he only seeks autonomy for Tibet to practice its unique Buddhist culture. I really don’t see any reason why China must so vehemently protest against Dalai Lama making speeches to his followers in India.
Anti-India media rhetoric in China began on the day of the Dalai Lama’s arrival in Tawang. A report entitled ‘Do not use the Dalai Card Against China’, published by Huanqiu quoted an unidentified scholar as having given a warning that ‘if India does not abandon its political manipulation of the Dalai Lama, the Chinese government, facing pressure from the people, will be forced to resort to measures for striking a blow to Indian interests’. A subsequent write-up captioned ‘India Covets Dalai Lama’s Visit’ People’s Daily Online, November 9, reproduced by Huanqiu, quoted an analyst as saying that ‘India may have forgotten the lesson of 1962, when its repeated provocation resulted in military clashes and India is now on this wrong track again’.
Time and again the Chinese want to prove they are the emerging giants in Asia. Caused by hatred against India, the country supported Sri Lanka during the LTTE war to win the confidence of the island nation and later developed the Hambantota port etc. In Pakistan, it is signing massive military deals to unnerve India. It has been alleged that they are indirectly supporting the terrorists and Maoists in India, overall to create the feeling of perplexity among Indians. None can deny this. But why make a hullabaloo over Dalai Lama’s visit? When the Chinese were hunting for Dalai Lama, it was India that gave him and his great number of followers refuge. Every time I see a Tibetan in India with the monk dress, I feel very pity. They have no money, no food, no home to call their own, yet they have so much unity among themselves. I should inform my Chinese brethren that Tibetans in India are very peaceful. India has no intentions to grab land or claim hegemony by giving refuge to Tibetans who fled your land. This is not the first time India did this. From centuries, India has been protecting and preserving cultures that came knocking for shelter (Parsis for example). This should not be made a cause of confrontation.
Now why is China threatening India with a war? This is only causing more hate than fear among Indians here. When the Chinese analyst said a 1962 war would repeat, our external affairs minister Shashi Tharoor called it “silly”. “India has come a long way since 1962. Talks of India not learning a lesson are silly,” Mr Tharoor said. Personally, I feel instead of threatening and creating a war-like situation, the governments must avoid schisms and bond with each other. Both China and India cannot claim superiority over the other. China and India both can equally respond if a war is to happen. If China thinks India can be defeated the same like 1962, then it is has got facts wrong. Indians who unduly relied on British, their army and generals during the 40’s, after post-independence, was an amateur in warfare having no training or administrative skills. Now it is not the same. India has better logistics, missiles, etc. It would be a hard game if played. Anyways, one thing is clear. India is not in a mood for war. It is now battling issues more important like poverty.
It is high time the media take the onus of bonding each other. Chinese media must immediately stop writing threats by “anonymous” analysts against India on newspapers and blogs. India on the other side must learn to maintain friendship with neighbors. The Indian media keeping in view of the democratic, secular and religious principles the country follows, must give moral and spiritual lessons to ‘godless’ people. That would make the world a better place!
Below, I have posted some comments of Indian readers (websites) that apparently divulge their feelings in the midst of all this.

War will never solve any issues! We should avoid it at all costs. We should go at least half-way, even more! Our enemies are scattered, scattered brains! They just want to kill our innocents to ascend to heaven! We need cooperation to tackle this more than China! Yes when two brothers fight, relatives are uneasy when they meet them! Likewise, our neighbours know which side of the bread is butter & take advantage! Let us unite than see each other with suspicion! We need unity & toning down our demo-crazy! Nobody will take us seriously, otherwise! Are we ready to discipline ourselves? Why have a siege mentality?
—
The main reason China will continue to develop and prosper, while India lags and moans is because of archaic, dark, and negative thinking. Look at Europe – they prosper by cooperating, collaborating, and helping each other.
—
Somehow, I feel the media is playing dirty games with illiterate and empty minded politicians, not actually understanding the importance of maintaining relationship with neighboring countries. India does not have any good relationship, with any of our neighboring countries.
—
China has no enemies now! They are friends with all including Japan who brutalised them in WWll, they are practical! They have solved Hongkong issue & at peace with Taiwan! In fact, they are more friends with our neighbours, sigh!!

Sheer numbers does not win the war. India has the cutting edge technology. It has nuclear deterrent. The Chinese face difficulty in mobilizing forces along the McMohan line while Indians are very close to it…though Indians are at low heights. The Chinese were able to attack in 1962, when our soldiers did not even have the proper guns, forget whether they had bullets. They withdraw once they know the treacherous terrain would not help them continue the logistics.
Today China has built a great infrastructure along the Tibet, but India has its best airforce squadron deployed at Tezpur, Assam. In no time Su-35MKI squadron can smash the infrastructure and convert the supply lines of Chinese back to the year 1962. So invasion of Chinese is fraught with dangers for China and certainly not India.
Then comes the missiles strikes. Yes Chinese have an edge over India on missile distance. They can inflict credible damage and Indians are not here to eat peanuts. Indians missiles too can track and destroy major cities of China like Beijing and Shanghai! The PLA which has built China for so long would see the destruction in front of it’s eyes….the damage, the prestigious economic growth of China definitely will collapse, notwithstanding Indian destruction.
Ultimately, China will not able to win the war, but lose more in terms of economically. Any use of Nuclear Bombs will be definitely retaliated by not only India but also USA as USA cannot afford to see a democratic ally into ashes. Don’t also forget that Russia, France, Israel are our long time buddies!

India will use the Dalai Lama to unsettle China from Tibet. India will soon give arms & ammunition to Tibetan freedom fighters the same way as Maoists are given arms by the Chinese govt. India will build up its navy and together with Japan & the US will encircle China. India will give all moral support to Uighur rebels to claim their birth right to independence. India will sign free trade agreements with Taiwan but deny Chinese made goods an entry into India. India will conduct high altitude air force exercise together with the US airforce. India will place nuke missiles all throughout the Indo-China border. India will launch & place a permanent spy satellite over China. India will hire computer hackers all over the world to hack into Chinese madia, govt & defense sites. India will fund democractic movements within China. India will call upon Chinese leaders to restore democracy in China. India will raise human rights violations in China in the UN.
Let the state sponsored Chinese media p!s off.

Yes, we have to be prepared at all times! The plain fact is our neighbours are more with them than with us! But let us not get carried away! China under a command economy is more capitalist than even US. US is bailing out & indirectly nationalised the big cos, though temporarily. China is fighting US against protectionism, the latter, champion of free trade till now! They need each other more than others! China is the biggest creditor to US & US the biggest debtor! China wants US to thrive & US is calling them for co-operation not competition!

Never have we Indians been patient like this time. I am sick and tired of the provocative statements made by the so called defence analysts in China. They have promoted false theories and unverified accusations against India. Why has not the government officially still responded to such bull shit?
You meen india provogate china? You people sick alwas. Bettur learn your history. If you try to provogate us more we will erase india like 1962. We then will no have enemy to fight. Your people own there are perscuted by hindus, like muslims and christians. So it is very clear who provogate who.
Please do not make the same mistakes as we have in the west. I am surprised people are even thinking of going to war over the Dalai Lama.
In the UK the idea that we would fight a war with someone like France or Germany in this day and age is totally out of all possibility. This is becuase we have already done this. We fought with each other for thousands of years. The last major time we did so was the second world war – since then there has not been a major war in Western Europe.
I believe this is because the Second World War was so horrendous with so many people dying and so many atrocities that we collectively decided we would never do such a thing again because modern technology makes war 1000,000 times worse these days than when we could just kill a few people with swords.
Now as some commentors say it is possible to destroy Beijing and Delhi with a few buttons.
Please think before if it is really worth it.
As I believe Gandhi once said “There is enough room for us all”.
Mr Bruce Lee or Jet Lee, whatever your name is. Before suggesting some history lessons, better you ‘butter’ your English. lol. Till then we will not try to ‘provogate’ you. hahaha. Your spineless analysts writing in disguise in your government-run newspapers do not even want to reveal their names. Wonder what kind of analysts they are. This is not 1962 dear, it is the 21 century. We will strongly reciprocate if you ‘provogate’ us lol. By the way try keeping away from our Indian blogs and threatening people here. Only English speaking people read such stuffs hahaha.
And Will, most of the countries that fought within and among countries in Europe fought out of greed and want. Despite them having enough, they demanded more. Now you cannot compare what India is facing with WW and bloody battles you fought. This concept cannot be applied here, you know why? All what we had your Europeans have taken away. Sadly, what is only left is our land. And if we cant protect this and have the freedom to do what we want, then we are useless. Tomorrow India will be a failed state like Pakistan. China has gone the maximum by testing our patience. If its war they want, that is what they will get. Jai Hind!
@ Lee – My dear friend, when you write a comment here on an Indian blog, thousands of Indians read. At least representing your people, it would be good to make some thoughtful statements instead of spreading or creating more hate. BTW, as a Christian reading your statement – “your people (Hindus) failed to protect Christians and Muslims” – I feel like adding a line. You have got it wrong that Hindus are against Christians or Muslims here. It is true Christians and Muslims, the minorities, often get persecuted. But that is not by Hindus, it is rather by fringe groups inculcating extremist views. I would call them extremists. Even you have them. Well didnt Uighurs in your country get persecuted? So I just want to clarify with you and all readers that – Hindus are peace-loving, hospitable and friendly people. Majority Hindus in India hate violence, persecution, of any sort. As a journalist working in this stream, I have to come to know this fact! That is why I strongly urged in my blog the need to stop making threats/claims against India in media. But why? Because Indians have started taking it serious, giving space for more hate.
@ Will -You are very true, at any possible means a war must be avoided. Its consequences are unbearable. Over seventy million people were killed in WW II, saddest part is most of them were civilians
This should really be a lesson to all of us. Like I said, media is the powerful instrument that can play a role here. However when it thrives on sensationalism, how can they try to take the onus of ‘uniting’. Sad! Money is all they care.
@ John – Dude dont disgrace Indians. Show some respect to that foreign man! From your writing it looks like you seem part of the Sangh Parivar?
Very well said Sam. We Hindus are peace loving people. The Hindu community is truly proud of people like you. Thanks for your support brother.
I Chinese and work in army. It true that my media here write bad on India. I want apologise to all of you. My govt here does not think well. They get angry on small issue. People in here does not hate India, it the govt that does this funy thing. Try to understand.
Only way to tackle the Chinese would be to stop all trade with them. If just few countries in Asia ban their products it is enuff. They will feel the pain. This pride and boast of war, missiles will slowly die then.
I appreciate your call to media to bridge between nations. Your post is so unlike others who are indeed promoting an imminent war. They fail to realize war is not the solution. India already suffered the last war it had with Pakistan in Kargil. Although India won the war, it hurt to the core each of our citizens making us emotionally and physically trapped. We only could cry seeing our soldiers give their lives, leaving their children orphans. May another Kargil never happen. May India flaunt rather its democracy and religious values like Sam said. May we have more Indians who think and write and promote peace and harmony.
WHAT CHINDIA – NONSENSE. THEY LIKE ALWAYS ACCUSING INDIA WITH THEIR STINKING MOUTHS. THEY HARDLY BRUSH THEIR TEETH OR THEIR MEMORY. REMINDING US OF 1962? WE WILL SHOW WHAT IS 2009 LIKE.
Guys, having such nationalism is not good. You guys are adding fuel to fire. Try to control your words and be more welcoming. We should live to the expectations of Gandhi and great people like Nehru. Let us be more understanding and forgiving.
How sad and hurting, check this below. India cant stand more of terrorism
((((India [ Images ] is the second most worst terrorism-hit country – behind only war-ravaged Iraq – facing eight terror attacks in 2008 alone and losing over 3,500 lives in the last few years. Quoting a recent United States report, city-based NGO–Bombay First–said India follows Iraq in the number of lives lost in various terror attacks last year.
“According to the report, terror attacks in India have increased in the past few years and claimed 3,674 lives, which is second to that of Iraq,” NGO Chairman Narinder Nayar said yesterday at a security summit organised at Hotel Trident [ Images ], one of the sites hit by the terrorists in last November. Nayar said India, battling terrorism for nearly three decades now, has been attacked from outside and within. ))))
On the last day of his week-long stay in Arunachal Pradesh, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama underlined the need for spiritual development for peaceful co-existence of different groups of people for establishing a developed and prosperous state.
The spiritual leader said he was active in spreading India’s ] message of non-violence and religious harmony throughout the world.
“I am the messenger of India’s ancient thoughts world over,” Dalai Lama told an assembly of intellectuals in Itanagar on Saturday.
He said democracy was deep rooted in India because the people had deep respect for the two precious ideals. Even non-believer like ‘Charvak’ was respected and given the high status of a sage in ancient India.
The Tibet an monk said he considered India as a master and Tibet its disciple as great scholars like Nagarjuna went from Nalanda to Tibet to preach Buddhism in the eighth century.
I am very touched to see how people of other faiths defend Hinduism and reveal the beauty of this religion than most of the Hindu thwackers commenting here. You guys are a shame!
Chinese people are generally aggressive. This is why they succeed in trade, economy, development and others. Indians should not be confused and declare a war. Like many of you already said, War can have a serious consequence on India. We should not go for one. I hope India can act maturely in this matter.
I deeply respect Chinese because they are hardworking people. We Indians have to learn a lesson from them. Eating, Sitting and Sleeping, we know nothing else. Why blame the Chinese? If you study history you will come to know the fact that India-China conflict was spurred by the British. They hate the Communist and acted in a way that benefits them. The McMohan line was created by them. Britishes are both of our enemy!!!!!!!!
@ Xman – Why waste time. Giving you a home work. Floccinaucinihilipilification (unlock the word in spare time)
Great post mate! Where?s the subscribe button? Haha
