“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves” – I am still awake doing one of those!

Happy New Year 2010!

Happy New Year 2010!

The last time we met was last year. We are now in 2010. Happy New Year! It is about 12:30 am, January 1, 2009. What am I doing this late? Nah! Not reveling, boozing or partying. Was just doing some rumination of Psalms 37 for 2010 last 30 mins you could say. Other reason I am not sleeping is cuz of someone violating my fundamental right to peacefully sleep and conclude my day.

From past 2 hours our neighborhood has turned party-poppers! Full of music, crowd and food. With the loud Bollywood music around, I just got a taste of tickling or painful sensations in the ear that occur at about 120 to 130 dB.

Oh, yea..I could hear the countdown shout. 9, 8, 7…1…yay yay!! Remember going with my friend to one of the happening places in Bangalore (MG Road) when people crowd on New Year’s eve. My friend was all excited, pulled me with him despite my lack of interest. I cant forget that day. Full of people, so attractively dressed, some in full shape, others in half shape (the effect of liquor), and few others waiting for the countdown.. Finally, it began and my mate was going berserk … 5..4…1..0….OVER…Well what next? I was still the same empty man I was before the countdown..I asked him what do you do next? I was clueless, was waiting for experienced people to guide me. Something dramatic happened in your life after counting 0..and yay? Nothing! Things were all just the same..The same emptiness will follow their life hours after the celebration and partying. There is still the lack of newness in heart. What is the use of bidding adieu to the old year and welcoming a 2010, when your heart is still the same filled with all vile and cynical things. Have we yet found the panacea of our existing and still to come problems? Anyways, I concluded the need for man to connect with God for having a new year party everyday in their lives instead of once in a year. That sounds better, aint it?

Someone asked me my New Year resolution. I just told him plainly and innocently that I want to love God like never before. Well, this resolution you could say was part of mine last year as well. But sadly loving God has been so difficult, you need to reintroduce the resolution after every one year. It might take years for me even to fulfill 10% of it. Frankly, that has been the most difficult part. Choosing between God and those that meet my eye.

Well, I asked my mate back, what about your’s..what is your resolution? I want that..I want this…oh! endless..No doubt, I should agree with this quote: “Be glad that you’re greedy; the national economy would collapse if you weren’t.” Really “we tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” Yes, dont make a huge funny list of things you dont have and things you want. Like I earlier said..just examine the things God has already done for you…and you would remain thankful at the same time guilty for having missed those amazing things in life which you failed to recognize. At least be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire, if you did, what would you look forward to in the new year?

I am tired, and I dont want to wake up late on the first day of my new year. Somebody does not like me having night culture :D …Wishing you a very happy, healthy and successful 2010!!!

Leaving you with this New Year’s Plea by Edgar Guest.

Lord, let me stand in the thick of the fight,
Let me bear what I must without whining;
Grant me the wisdom to do what is right,
Though a thousand false beacons are shining.

Let me be true as the steel of a blade,
Make me bigger than skillful or clever;
Teach me to cling to my best, unafraid,
And harken to false gospels, never.

Let me be brave when the burden is great,
Faithful when wounded by sorrow;
Teach me, when troubled, with patience to wait
The better and brighter to-morrow.

Spare me from hatred and envy and shame,
Open my eyes to life’s beauty;
Let not the glitter of fortune or fame
Blind me to what is my duty.

Let me be true to myself to the end,
Let me stand to my task without whining;
Let me be right as a man, as a friend,
Though a thousand false beacons are shining.

Adios ~ SAM
