Christopher Hitchens bashes Mother Teresa yet again

Every time I come across the name Christopher Hitchens, I am reminded of Gilbert Chesterston’s statement – “If there were no God, there would be no atheists.” The man has built a niche by calling himself a secular humanist and modern atheist. A trifling, rinky-dink individual who came to limelight after his “God Is Not Great” and several other anti-theist books.

Guess who is his latest pick for his anti-Christian tirade? Global humanitarian icon Mother Teresa. Last month, Hitchens appeared on Dennis Miller’s Internet radio show condemning Mother Teresa, yet again. Here is one of his choice statements: “The woman was a fanatic and a fundamentalist and a fraud, and millions of people are much worse off because of her life, and it’s a shame there is no hell for your ***** to go to.”

Hitchens is popular for his atheist views and television talks where he minces no words condemning God and His people. Seriously, on several of his shows I have seen the man talking with a cup of beer in his hand. That’s the atheist role model he has been giving his upcoming compeers. Ask him to quit anything except not cigarettes and alcohol. He will condemn God at any platform provided you replace the glass of water with booze.

Hitchens often speaks out against the Abrahamic religions, or what he calls “the three great monotheisms” (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). In his book, God Is Not Great, Hitchens expanded his criticism to include all religions, including those rarely criticized by Western secularists such as Hinduism and neo-paganism. However, I feel he crossed the line hurting the sentiments of millions of Indians like me when he condemned Mother Teresa so uncouthly.

Is there lack of apologists to take on this man? Among many I have seen, one who prominently comes to mind as his strong Christian opponent who often makes him stutter, giving him the needed heebie jeebies at his TV shows, college auditoriums and science platforms is the Mumbai-born Dinesh D Souza whose audacity to challenge Hitchen’s anywhere, anytime has stunned me. It is very ironical that Dinesh from India is the favourite Christian apologist against Hitchen’s even in a Christian nation like America. I had last year read Dinesh’s “What’s So Great About Christianity”. I call it a masterpiece. The book challenges the assumptions of both believers and doubters and affirms that there really is, indeed, something great about Christianity. I have greatly treasured Dinesh’s moderate views on the greatness of Christianity that has moralised the world, making it a peaceful place. You rarely find Christian theologians or authors substantiating Christianity on the very lines of Darwinians, scientists and modern atheists. Some say Science can never understand God and it is not apt for spiritual people to debate with scientific people. I really dont buy this point. My pastor often says – “Science is not antithetical to God. It rather only proves that there is God.” Well, Kudos to people like Dinesh for his writing as well as speaking that glorifies God while also proving that Science validates the presence of God.

Below I have uploaded a video of Dinesh debating with Hitchens on science and religion. I exactly dont remember the videos I had seen sometime back in which Dinesh was at his best, but am sure you will enjoy the conversation/debate between both at the video below. Study both of them and tell me who and why you liked, if possible do include the statement that struck you. Adios ~ SAM
