A Wednesday filled with pandemonium!

Wednesday was a tiring day. There was the dalit rally (read here) that saw people from Kanyakumari to Kashmir shouting: “We want justice”. I could feel their angst caused by the lack of justice from last five decades. They are Dalits who formerly were Hindus, Sikhs or Buddhists. After they embraced Christianity, they discover that they lose all benefits they previously enjoyed. That includes the soci-economic and educational benefits. Many although want to really embrace the Christian God, are forced not to do so. Still thousands of Hindus who decided to follow Jesus and become Christians hide their names to continue enjoying the benefits. There is freedom of religion in India, but standing in the social strata, this freedom sometimes is forcefully limited due to the status quo.

On the other side, I also felt a pinch of why the government keeps delaying this, especially the Congress Government which has been promising to redress injustice. If they do, the opposition Hindu nationalist party will organise huge rallies and sit-ins alleging that Congress was facilitating conversions. Imagine if Sonia Gandhi (herself a Christian) approve the SC status for Dalit Christians, then she would be called “Pope’s servant”, “anti-Hindu”, “Vatican destroyer”, etc. No wonder last elections when her party won with a huge margin and many highly anticipated her to take over the Prime Minister’s post, she humbly refused. She knew the opposition mindset. There would be chaos everywhere, from burning of buses to destroying public property. Dont forget, India is world’s largest democratic country, so all this is possible. Freedom assured in this demo-crazy!

Apart from the rally, Wednesday also contained another significant event – My Confrontation with a Big Shot. I was so miffed by the exasperating behavior of a celebrity in the evangelical circles. The head honcho of one of the largest Indian Christian body, upset over his site not working in our server, calls me and speaks so disparagingly that he really got on my nerve’s. I humbly explained – “This is a technical issue with the server and not the script and this should take a lot of time and effort from our US executives. Also we have some important gatherings due to which it is delaying.” Whatsoever, the veteran rings me: “Your act is jeopardising my organisation. I was with your boss last week in Korea, London, bla bla. All meetings I knew of has been over, so stop playing around, and give what I ask…etc..etc”

What made me overwrought and disquietingly unglued was his bossing attitude even after our organisation generously and sympathetically agreed to offer them free services (let it be design, hosting, or whatever) for their importance in the Christian world. Upon this, a man being ungrateful? Just because he is some big wheel? I cant tolerate such high-much-a-much attitude, specially when I see this among people who claim to be spiritual and exposing a holier-than-thou attitude. The entire conversation made me feel so jittery. However, I restricted my words all because of my boss’s image. I later vent my anger on my boss, telling we should immediately stop honoring such people. He kindly explained, just like I expected: “He is my friend, treat him well.” In deed he is and that is why I gave my ear to the man’s ungrateful dismaying talk.

Later I have a word with the head honcho’s secretary who tells me – - all big shots are like this dude, aren’t you aware? Really? I am not aware of such people in the Christian circle, believe me. May be in business circles and organisations such things like bullying and verbal abuses happen? This incident made me really ruminate on how things work in companies where your boss constantly blocks your promotion or sabotages your work for his own good. Frankly, I want to hear from people who work in companies and experience such things. If the person lacks understanding, sympathy, and ungratefully speaks, what do you guys usually do? Do give me your experiences, as I am keen to learn from you all. Is the outburst first? Or you humbly chew it all for the stability of your family life?

All my life I have been my own boss, either working as a freelancer or guiding others under me. When I speak to such people like the incident I was sharing, I feel a little bit perplexed. On the other side, happy also that I dont have to work in some company. The last time I had a real brawl was when I was working in our own organisation’s IT firm when I tried to market web-development. A realtor refused to pay on time, especially when my life was then on a sinking boat, desperately in need of money, he just wont pay. I manhandled him when he abused me. I wished I never did that. I still regret thinking of that day. May be such incidents taught me to be patient and deal with these people leniently. It is so difficult to keep your Christian morals and spiritual side, when dealing with the world, true? Sadly, my incident is with one who is highly spiritual.

Oh yea, from my present and past experiences, I see spiritual people sometimes to act unspiritual and immoral. Mostly they dont practise what they preach, and always want to claim authority, name, fame. Within my organisation/church I have seen people acting not on God’s motives/intentions, but on their self-seeking, close-fisted, avaricious impulsion. I rather love dealing with a Sinner who claims to be full of sins and is humble and ready to believe and accept your word. I think if just one verse in Bible is neatly put into practise, the so called spiritual Christians would do more good to God and the society. There is pride and hegemony within them. Anyways, let me not divert from the topic. So guys share with me your experiences, tell me how you have been patient or hotheaded with your boss. Do such people like I mentioned also exist in your companies?

Waiting for your comments…

Adios ~ SAM

Sam, I would say you are very lucky. As a freelancer and not working in any company you enjoy the most freedom. I will share one incident I faced in my first company. The boss having some personal grudge on me, forced me one day to finish a project in half the time given. I was forced to work extra time. He was so cunning that he would cut the generator wires so I will give up after electricity goes. However, I decided to complete it at any cost and would go to a cafe and install the programs and finish the calculations. The next day when he finds me having completed, he intentionally would remove a sheet, and tell: “You have done it all wrong. One very important page is missing. Do it all again in order within 24 hours.” I got so pissed off, but I cant react. Such things happen. Now its a different boss, I always try to be friendly and nice so I can escape such inevitable situations. From my opinion, never be reactive to your boss. That way you save yourself.

Man, the word Boss itself sends shiver. The man under whom I work is so fierce that we really dare not talk looking at his face. We do get paid well but there is also the pressure that cannot be avoided.

Bullying in companies happens everywhere. This is not new, I think you have not faced any till now. Since you have never faced such people, you are may be taking this small case seriously?

I fully agree that spiritual people today are ones who need guide more than others. I have seen so much pride and greed in them. You surely must have read about the Church of South India general secretary swindling crores from tsunami fund. This is what is happening. They can reach the masses only if they humble. This is the bottomline. They have lost their heavenly commission.

I have never tried to be patient like many here are saying. Always it is good to be expressive. When I was being bullied by my boss for my good looks and popularity, I stood up to his call and said just f**** off. I threw my papers on him, asked him to suspend me. I now do not regret. I work in a better place friends. So did you get the moral? ;- )

Never ever invite your boss to your home. I quit my company after he frequented my home to meet my wife.
