Chinese people believe India a threat to China, really?

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Wen Jibao

I am totally flabbergasted. I would say to the extent that it has sent supersonic shockwaves to my well-kept world of political and international affairs. A recent poll in China divulged, “90 per cent of the Chinese think India poses the biggest threat to its existence.”

Are you kidding me? Ineffectual, inferior, teensy-weensy India a threat to the next-to-be-superpower China? Where is China today? And where is India today? Cannot be compared. I should whole-heartedly without any prejudice or bias agree here that India is 5 years behind of China and is yet to catch-up with this largest country in East Asia and the most populous in the world.

Let us be frank and candid. China is world’s third or second largest economy nominally. It is also a nuclear state and has the world’s largest standing army with the second largest defense budget. The list goes on. Oh! Almost forgot. It is also world’s fastest growing economies and the world’s second largest exporter and the third largest importer of goods.

Now, Sam you as an Indian why all praises for China? Good question! Those still in the political arena and some even in the biz are unaware that China is so much ahead of India. Those nationalists and chauvinists, who claim ‘Incredible India’ and some similar stuff, should place a cursory look at the development in both the countries. Let us start with the infrastructure, to the sustainable development and then the growing economy. They have excelled us in all ways. It is not that India missed the superpower bandwagon. We are still in line, but you see our growth is much slower.

Does that mean China has nothing to worry? Doesn’t seem so. Here, people crafted the success of today’s growing economy and the global status and it is not the State. Our State has terribly failed with its mechanism and control. This is not the case in China. They worry that the developments they see is not mainly crafted by the passion of the people but was the State that got it there. It is China’s State that built what it is today and took the country to the top. It really is true. People there have 24/7 biz and development in mind. You find their authorities, bureaucrats having objectives always relating to investment, output and growth.

Anyways, our discussion here is not about economy, but the reason for the Chinese people to believe India as a threat. If you are an Indian, and you keenly follow the news of politics of state and international, tell me, who do you think is a threat to whom? We here in India fear China’s growth and power is a threat to our security and development. But I dint know it was contrary to our feelings. But why should China fear India as a threat? Well there can be few reasons.

Mainly, the poll was taken after India announced that it would send 60,000 troops to the border with China. Now why did India make such a move? Doesn’t India have better things to worry? Like our poverty issues, unemployment, poor infrastructure, pollution, domestic violence, etc. Why the dispatching of troops to the border? Alright again by doing a cursory study one can ostensibly note that from post-independence or let us say even pre-independence India never wanted or preferred bloodshed or war. Peace and neighborliness was at the first of all others. Pakistan? What happened today? It forced itself from India and today is out of our hand. So Sam, has not India waged war with Pakistan? Yes, you are absolutely right and the war was waged because of Pakistan claiming more and more space even after the acquiring of its land. The Kashmir issue is one and it funding terrorists in our soil was the other. What can our country do? We are in no mood to sell all our borders and weep over some trivial judgment.

In Sri Lanka, when the full-scale war was in progress, despite India being its best friend. It did not support the country with arms, ammunition like other countries. It was against war and it said it would not offer monetary or military support for such a barbarous act. We clearly stood against the violation of human rights. Trust me, the toll you see in media on the civilians killed is false! It is 3 times higher than that. The Government has deliberately covered it. I have substantial evidence for it.

Now China has also started claiming some of India’s border (Arunachal and its surrounding), which is deeply worrying India. In 1962 when the Sino war between India and China was taking place, it seems our Nehruji was so naive and so friendly that he never expected a surprise attack from the Chinese army, which subsequently led to severe casualties in the Indian side besides its defeat. So India really does not want to compromise anymore. It is just trying to be on the safer side. And that is why one can construe the troops being sent. Nothing wrong in it, or is there one?

It is very hurting that 74 percent people in the poll said China should not maintain friendly relations with India after its ‘military provocation.’ Representing the Indians I can assure my Chinese neighbors that we have no enmity against your country and we really love that your country is seeing such huge development which apparently is a lesson for our government. By the time India eradicate its poverty and unemployment, China will be on the top, the peak. I promise! So no worries, Ok? Bhai-Bhai! :D And finally, we Indians only hope that our chaotic government and its sluggish authorities can be more assiduous and caring. Let us use our best political tool – the Democracy – to become the most successful nation in the world, where human rights stands first! Not in arms and ammunition, or war, but in excellent morals, character, development, well-kept human rights, etc. That is what we need today. We really dont need the superpower tag!! May be Pakistan can take it. What you say?

Adios ~ SAM

I am an ordinary Chinese. I have grown up in China where most people were used to think that India was a friendly country. All our official news on India portrated India as a friendly country, even though news regarding India have been very few in all Chinese media. The fact is that few people in China are interested in India as we are developing ourselves to catch up USA. But the more Chinese people search around foreign media, the more we find out that most Indians and India media are extremely hostile to China and Chinese. Whenever there is a topic on China in an international forum, most indians just come like flies and bash China/Chinese non-stop.

Like sending massive troops and its most advanced combat planes to Chinese borders, despite of whatever excuses, it is an outright military provocation! Of course most Chinese got offended. How dare you, Indians?!!

Yes, most of us therefore think India is a BIG THREAT to China. This THREAT does not mean by any competition, but just like a mosquito constantly hiding in the dark, trying to bite a drop of your blood during the night when you wanna go to sleep – it is cheap and disturbing! Do NOT misunderstand that our politeness is a sign of weakness. To squash a mosquito is not a hard thing for PLA to do if they loss their temper.

  2. Manoj on June 20th, 2009 3:28 am

Mr. Chinese, what is the outright military provocation you are talking about? We forgetting about our borders and letting the crafty Chinese take over our borders? The last war we fought with the Chinese indeed taught us some big lessons. Really big lessons of whom to trust and whom not to. Not all what glitters is gold!!!!

  3. Indianiser on June 20th, 2009 3:36 pm

I am sorry about the Indians bashing Chinese in the international fora..May be they need to talk to me? see I was all praises for China in this piece, dont yaa agree? And I also fully agree with you with the last statement ((To squash a mosquito is not a hard thing for PLA to do if they loss their temper)) . . PLA if lost their temper is so dangerous!!!! I totally agree with you…We already saw that in Sudan, Sri Lanka..etc Amazing country!! Hope you can someday come to India and know how friendly and nice our people here are :) ..India’s spectacular diversity is visible in its languages, cultures, castes, and religions…you should really come sometime :)

Strange, the article was hailing Chinese and they cant even have the eyes to see it.

  5. Vikram on June 22nd, 2009 5:47 am

People like Sam are the ones who go abroad and work as white man’s slaves while forgetting about their home country and failing to make any contributions to its growth. Stop praising others and lets do something for Bharat.

    Mr So called chinese

Dont tell how dare indians. Dont try tp reach others when you are not perfect.

Dont over estimate your country to such an extent that you all People think that you can defeat the entire world. China be aware, We indians also comming and comming very strongly. If you feel that you can destroy us like a mosquito, we also think the same. So dont talk of destruction, If we get destroyed we make sure that you will also get destroyed.

You all people are getting nervous about India… Dont worry my fellow friends. We indians will grow whether China likes it or dislikes it.

If you can make stratergy to contain india, If India does the same you start getting worried.

And dont again over estimate your country.

  7. Bharat on July 18th, 2009 9:47 pm

Vikram… what are you gonna do for me? Well, I praise Sam in keeping realities in mind while writing this article. And Sam, you do not sound like you are all praise for China, you are very right in pointing the truth. Their military is larger and better funded than ours. They have more and better fighter jets than we do. And their economy is not only already bigger, but also growing at a faster rate. The man who commented as Chinese, is actually something less than ordinary to have forgotten that India’s military, although smaller, but is very comparable to the Chinese military. Our fighter jets are very comparable to the Chinese too. And our Navy is actually way superior than the Chinese. However, if war does occur, then allies would matter more than the warrior’s own might. Russia is India’s old friend with bitter relations with the Chinese, and the United States would look for nothing more than an excuse to involve itself to make sure China is never able to come up again. Then talk about Europe, that is just waiting for any chance to sanction whatever it can on China, after bearing the brunt on cotton trades from last year. With North Korea and Pakistan as its only allies, I seriously doubt China could afford a war with India even if it were twice as strong than it is now. As far as India’s attitude and its amassing of troops on the border is concerned, China should first look at itself. It has been providing Pakistan with finances and technology and weapons and what not to keep India busy while China remains big bully of Asia. If it were limited to that, Indians would understand, but then the Chinese go as far as to guiding the local communist political parties here in India to derail the government and its plans. With this, and India’s 1962 experience in mind, I would like to ask that “ordinary Chinese”, how else should Indians look at the Chinese if not with extreme caution? With over 50 billion dollar a year trade with India, It will be a suicide for the Chinese industries if PLA loses its mind like this ‘ordinary Chinese’.

  8. Bharat on July 18th, 2009 10:37 pm

After reading the comments of a couple of my Indian fellows, I feel such urge to write this…

I have met a lot of Chinese. In the USA, in India, and in China. Not one Chinese I found to be as arrogant as the ‘ordinary Chinese’ that posted here.

The Chinese in general are full of humility and are very supportive of the Indian people. Whether you meet them in China, or somewhere else outside, you will not find them behaving contrary to my opinion. However, as you can find some arrogant Indians, I am sure you can find similar Chinese too.

Just as most of us Indians, the Chinese are more busy mending their own day-to-day business than mold their character on their country’s policies. Most of characteristics come from the similarities in our history and culture. And in fact, although one may find it surprising, I have seen more Chinese supporting the Indians against the Pakistanis in internet discussion forums, than vice-versa.

So, my Indian brethren, please do NOT use a singled out incident, or a country’s policies, to base your opinions about the people of that/any country. Please do meet some Chinese, and I am sure you will find them surprisingly welcoming and helpful.

Sam, you write really good, and don’t let immature comments of the likes of Vikram affect your writing.

P.S. I just checked the website, that has been taken as the source of poll to reflect your headline. I cannot read Mandarin well, so someone read it for me. The poll goes like this… (forgive me for not being able to edit it properly)

Question:- Do you think China should align with India AT ALL COSTS?
    8% -YES.
    75% – NO.
    16% – CANNOT SAY!

Whom do you think India’s unfriendly attitude is most harmful to?
    66% – It harms INDIA.
    16% – It harms CHINA
    18% – Cannot tell.

Why do you think India so frequently displays anti-China attitude?
51% – To appease the international community.
37% – True hatred for the Chinese.
12% To gain political power internally.

How do you think should China deal with separatist forces in India?
    43% – Covertly.
    38% – Openly.
    15% – Never.
    4% – Cannot say.

Now, as I have already mentioned, they behave normally as we do… how many/what kind of us Indians really participate in such polls when conducted in India? That should answer it all.

  9. Jijo on July 21st, 2009 4:03 am

Mr Bharat, I dont know what kind of Chinese you met, may be you should go to China to meet one. I was there in China for 5 years and I would say they are not as friendly, mannered and kind like we are. In India let it be a white, black or brown man, whoever visits our home first thing to do is give a glass of water, invite for lunch or if the man is lost even provide shelter. There I found people to be very hostile to dark skin. They respect the Americans, British, but when a darker skin is seen, they have some sort of attitude problem. Have you experienced this? May be you saw the Chinese only in America. America surely is a wonderful country and Indians or Chinese there have the nature of that country.

  10. Ramesh on July 21st, 2009 1:51 pm

Sam has pointed facts very rightly. Why not we Indians learn to accept the reality? We should take this as a challenge and I think like Sam said we need to be the best country not in terms of arms etc but with good human right record. Thanks Sam.

  11. Indianiser on July 22nd, 2009 4:22 am

I agree with Bharat that there are many Chinese with exceptional character and Ive come across many such. Their travail, diligence, punctuality..etc..is adorable and if Indians posses them am sure we can eradicate much of our problems in less time.

Yes Ramesh, I strongly think India should forget about the superpower bandwagon and concentrate more on projecting our country as a place where ‘freedom’ and ‘unity in diversity’ is more prominent. We really need to have a clean human rights record.

  12. Bharat on July 22nd, 2009 3:35 pm

    Jijo,
If you lived in China for 5 years, then I am sure your experience must be so vast and rich that it can be taken as a scale to measure the character of the Chinese. My experience is based on my visit to Beijing (nowhere else in China) and some places in the United States. Though in Beijing people must have been nice because it is a cosmopolitan city, the Chinese I met in the U.S. were from remote eastern areas in China. However, I would also like to point out that in remote parts of India, everyone who is not local looks hostile and is treated bad. Same goes with the United States too where there is no dearth of rednecks.

And far as dark skinned people are concerned, I have seen them getting discriminated more in India, my own country, than anywhere. Of course it does not vindicate the Chinese in any way. But taking all these points into consideration, along with your statement that you lived there for 5 long years, I still find it hard to believe that average Chinese behave the way that “ordinary Chinese” did up there in this comments section.

And so, the results of the poll being talked here also come under question. I visited that website, and many Chinese were of the view that that website is subscribed by the uninformed people living in the countrysides, the rednecks of China. The website appears to have some very soft corner for the Pakistanis (not difficult to understand why), while trying its best to show India in poor light, with pictures of people lying on footpaths or bathing out in the open (if India is so poor, should they really think we are such a threat to them?). It is all manipulation there, nothing else.

And yes, I completely agree with you on the fact that in the U.S., people do acquire the culture prevalent there, especially Indians (and after reading your comment, I bet Chinese too – East Europeans and blacks are exceptions though lol).

  13. Amir on July 26th, 2009 10:00 pm

I think you are the biggest chinese suck up I have ever seen. You need to re-look at your own a country in a whole new way and re-think about what you’ve written. India being a democracy does not have the political power to force its people to work long hours and build immensely huge structures while half its populations sleeps in mud huts. The development has to happen bottom up and that will take time. None the less, we are developing at a much faster rate than China did in its initial years. Remember, this revolution in China started back in the 70′s.

And your ideas when it comes to military power and your response to ‘A chinese’ is pathetic. TO SQUASH A MOSQUITO IS NOT A HARD THING TO DO IF THE PLA LOSES ITS TEMPER ?

the definition of a mosquito :

With an estimated total active force of 1,325,000 personnel, India maintains the world’s third largest armed forces. With strength of approximately 170,000 personnel and 1,700 aircraft, including 852 combat aircraft in active service, the Indian Air Force is the world’s fourth largest.

The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the armed forces of India. It currently has approximately 55,000 personnel on active duty, including 5,000 members of the naval aviation branch and 2,000 marine commandos, making it the world’s fifth largest navy.[2] The Indian Navy currently operates more than 155 vessels, including the aircraft carrier INS Viraat, along with operational jet fighters.

And ofcourse we have AGNI 3 the nuclear balistic missile that can be fired onto any chinese city at any time from land, air and sea.

Now you may want to re-think of squashing this mosquito.

You are truly brilliant, unlike most liberal educated Indian elites (or what I like to call Imperialist British brainwashed) who are so deluded by the Indian media that they truly think that India is currently a challenge to China. I have many friends who work in China and Indian expats in China know the difference between the two countries. From what I’ve heard the Chinese compares us with Pakistan and Africa. And the troubles that China faces (corruption, inequality of wealth, ethnic violence) are just a fraction of India’s problems.
In my opinion this bashing of China will hurt India in the long run. I believe we are being used by the West so the two Asian giants won’t work together to realize our real potential.

Man I think the first comment in this post itself reveals the Chinese nature. If India is a mosquito for Chinese like the commenter, let me also educate you that it is not just mosquito, it is an infected mosquito that can cause you people elephantiasis. lol. You guys can never move your leg, mind you. May be just one drop sucking is enough ‘Ordinary Chinese’. Dont underestimate India.

well, my dear fellow indians…the only thing which i would say is….better we mind our own business, let them think what they want to, why to get tensed? Our peoples are peace loving…we’re friendly….and the most important thing is that we all are ambitious.

dear indianfriends& tothat stupid from china, just forget about economical differences as two economies are still to grow, india is not that india in 1962,china might not be that china also , but things have totally changed as to these two countries own the right to be potential super powers in thenear future,if its a war india will ultimately win why because, people fear of chinese for thier nondisclosed armedpower or nuclearpower, also people falsly values, believe india’s statics which are always open totheworld, but infact both these nations have got secret weponary, armedpower, nuclearwepons than any other countries in the world, also that india is systematically and consistently growing in all fields, china is exagerating or fakely trying to showoff the world that it posseses secret weponary which noone else has got,why because china is keenly devloping on trade, importexport, economy , it havn’thad much time to develope its conventional weponary to modernsophiticated weponery as india now posses, moreover postwar survival&reconstructive power &destroying capacity is with india more than china why because ,in chinese population usable youth power is only 50% where as in india itis 90%,&india possess a more educatedhuman resource ,sophisticatedsoftware resource, natural resource,& also collective resposibility amongst citizens in india is more than chinese as china is only a narrowmindedcommunist nation &for all these reasons& other which i have not quoted here INDIA will surely superceed china in all-ways undoubtedly.bharat mata ki jay.so my stupid chinese supporter never compare a world’s third super power to a mosquito,if india is compared to a mosquito china is only a dirty housefly which has got only lesser life than a mosquito, better compare any little contry like pakisthan to a mosquito.
